Polar Bear Country

A town on the edge of Hudson Bay lives at the bleeding edge of human and wildlife coexistence.

Set on the edge of Hudson Bay, Churchill, Manitoba is a town of fewer than a thousand people. It hosts annual beluga whale migrations, sees the Northern Lights more than three hundred nights a year, and is ringed by pristine, untouched tundra.

Churchill's most famous visitor, however, is the mighty polar bear. Each year hundreds gather on the surrounding shorelines, waiting for the sea ice to form so they can hunt seals — creating a fascinating, and potentially dangerous, interaction between the residents of Churchill and the world's largest land carnivore.

Through interviews and rarely witnessed encounters, Polar Bear Country follows a community that has learned to co-exist with, protect, and share their love of these apex predators — a town exploring the bleeding edge of human and wildlife coexistence.
