Senior Story Editor

Ready to use your video editing talents to help create inspiring nature travel videos, stunning wildlife documentaries, and emotional human-centric stories? Join our small documentary production team and work with us to create compelling videos that center incredible people and stunning wildlife destinations. As a Senior Story Editor, you’ll work with our team to develop high-level concepts for compelling documentary films of varying lengths, and will be primarily responsible for crafting these stories from the assembly edit stage all the way to a final cut.

This full-time, salaried position is ideal for someone with 5-10 years of experience as a story editor (documentary-specific experience preferred). We’re looking for someone that is excited to take an ownership-level stake in our creative process, and that is confident in their ability to worth with our team to take hours of A-roll, B-roll, and interview selects and shape it into a cogent, full-hearted, and emotional story.

This is an excellent opportunity to deepen your experience in documentary filmmaking and editing, all while working with stunning and inspiring wildlife footage.

Essential Duties

To perform this job successfully, the applicant must be able to perform the following duties well. Additional duties may be added or assigned at any time.

Story Development

  • Review interview footage and identify a clear and compelling pitch for a story

  • Build an assembly edit, and incorporate our team’s feedback to refine it

  • Work with assistant editors and directors to craft a rough cut that establishes a compelling narrative arc and emotional tone

Finishing and Leadership

  • Manage the finishing process for a final cut, including music, sound mix, color grade, and graphics

  • Offer creative direction and feedback to more junior editors, helping them to refine their edits and identify core storylines

  • Offer and receive feedback in a productive and respectful manner

  • Continually seek out and implement internal process improvements, including collaboration, organization, and communication processes.

General Qualifications

  • 5-7 years’ experience working in documentary-specific video production

  • 5-7 years’ experience using Adobe Premiere Pro (macOS experience preferred) to complete all steps of post production to create and edit high-quality videos

  • Proven editing experience in the form of video reels and/or samples of previous editing work

Additional Skills and Abilities

  • Possesses a demonstrated passion for nature, wildlife, and conservation

  • Exceptional attention to detail and dedication to consistency, workflow efficiency and organization

  • Proficiency using Adobe After Effects software to create animated motion graphics and visual effects such as overlays, intros, outros, titles and transitions is preferred but not required

  • Comfortable using and transitioning between common video codecs, frame rates/sizes, resolutions, aspect ratios, proxy files, and file/export formats

  • Ability to effectively balance competing priorities, goals and timelines to meet key project deadlines

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with high levels of integrity, maturity and enthusiasm

  • Passion for self-education, problem solving, and quickly learning new software and other skills on the job

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee will also be required to type, move a computer cursor and write. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation commensurate with experience: Base salary range of $70,000-$80,000 USD, plus potential for annual bonus. This full-time position comes with generous Paid Time Off. Eligibility for employer sponsored medical insurance after a predetermined period of time.

Location

Off the Map Media currently has a remote work model, with some team members in Boulder/Denver and one in Durango Colorado. Residing in the Boulder/ Denver Metro Area or Durango is preferred but not required. Depending on the applicant’s location a hybrid work model may be adopted and some in person co-working may be required.
